Cody Kerry
Vegetable Garden Project
For the successive vegetable garden I planted radishes, lettuce and spinach for the spring to summer to
fall. Common pests for radishes are aphids, slugs, snails and cabbage root maggots. Lettuce leaf had all
the same pests as radishes , with the addition of leaf miners and cutworms. Again, spinach has the same
pests as radishes.
For the beneficial habitat garden I chose to plants roses since they will attract butterflies and
Bumble bees to help with pollination. The chives will attract honeybees for pollination. Buckwheat
attracts hoverflies, which eat aphids in their larva stage and pollinate in their adult stage. Buckwheat
also attracts centipedes which will eat worms. Dill will attract lacewings which eat a variety of small
insect pests.
For the raspberry plants, Raspberry cane maggots will be a problem. They will lay eggs on the tips of
new canes and shoots. The newly hatched larvae will tunnel into young shoots and move down the root
which will cause girdling to the shoot tip. Signs of raspberry cane maggots are wilted and discolored
plants. Raspberry cane maggots can be prevented by pruning out and destroying infested shoots and
canes. For blackberries, Japanese beetles will eat the leaves until only veins remain. They can be dealt
with by spraying them with kaolin clay. Pests that will be attracted to cranberries are black headed fire
worms, spotted fire worms and cranberry blossom worms. Pests to watch out for with Blueberries are
blueberry maggots, which can be killed with yellow sticky traps. Garlic defends cabbage from
diamondback moth, cabbage worms and others. Bush snaps beans provide nitrogen fixation for the
nasturtium.
